Police in Rubanda District have launched investigations into a gruesome case of mob action that claimed the life of a 35-year-old boda boda rider in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Leodinas Arineitwe, a resident of Kagunga Cell in Kigyeyo Ward, Rubanda Town Council.
According to police, the incident occurred on April 1, 2026, at around 3:30 a.m. in Mukitojo Cell, Kigyeyo Ward. It is alleged that Arineitwe was accused by an angry mob of stealing a pig, leading to his brutal lynching.
Reports indicate that the area chairperson, Denis Byamugisha, alerted authorities at Ikumba Police Station after hearing alarm calls from residents who were reportedly assaulting a suspected thief. Police officers, led by the Officer in Charge, responded swiftly to the scene.
However, upon arrival, the officers found the mob had already dispersed. Arineitwe was discovered lying lifeless in a pool of blood, bearing deep cut wounds to the head. His motorcycle, registration number UDL 373P (Bajaj Boxer, red in color), had been placed on top of his body, with a pig tied onto it.
Police processed and documented the scene, recovering several exhibits including two sticks, an iron bar, a pair of sandals, canvas shoes, the motorcycle, and the pig.
A postmortem examination has since been conducted, and the body handed over to the family for burial.
Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson Elly Maate condemned the act and reiterated the dangers of mob justice, urging the public to always hand over suspects to law enforcement agencies instead of taking the law into their own hands.
"Investigations into the incident are ongoing, with efforts underway to identify and apprehend the individuals involved in the killing," Maate noted.
