Masaka High Court Sets August 14 for Bail Hearing of Bobi's Bodyguards
As the bail hearing approaches, attention will be focused on the Masaka High Court, where the fate of the four bodyguards will be decided.

The Masaka High Court has scheduled a bail hearing for August 14, 2025, for four bodyguards of National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, who are facing charges of aggravated robbery.

The accused include Eddy Ssebuufu, also known as Eddie Mutwe, the head of Kyagulanyi's security; Achileo Kivumbi, the head of security at NUP headquarters; Gadafi Mugumya, aka Gen Gaddafi; and Smart Wakabi

The charges against them stem from an incident on May 18, 2024, during the funeral of UK-based businessman Pascal Ssekasamba in Lwengo District. Journalists Margret Kayondo and Zainabu Namusaazi alleged that the bodyguards assaulted them, destroyed their equipment, and stole their valuables

Eddie Mutwe, who has been in detention since February 2025, was initially denied bail and remanded to Luzira Prison. His lawyer, Magellan Kazibwe, reported that Mutwe had been tortured while in custody, suffering injuries including scars, bruises, and discolouration on his arms

The case has raised concerns about the treatment of opposition supporters and the use of the judicial system to silence critics. The NUP has accused the government of using trumped-up charges to harass and intimidate its members.

As the bail hearing approaches, attention will be focused on the Masaka High Court, where the fate of the four bodyguards will be decided.

Will they be granted bail, or will they remain in detention pending trial? The outcome will be closely watched by the opposition, human rights groups, and the international community.
