EC Warns Against Repeat of NRM Primary Violence Ahead of 2026 Elections

The Electoral Commission of Uganda (ECU) has expressed deep concern over the violence, irregularities, and loss of life that marred last week’s National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primaries.

The Commission fears that if such chaos goes unchecked, it could spill over into the 2026 general elections.

EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi acknowledged that while the Commission was encouraged by the high voter turnout, the aftermath was disappointing and alarming.

“We were pleased with the enthusiasm of voters, but what followed left us heartbroken,” Mucunguzi said.

“We saw violence, destruction, and even deaths. This should never be part of any democratic process.”

The Commission is now urging political parties that have not yet held their primaries to learn from the NRM’s experience and take preventive measures to ensure peaceful and credible internal elections.

“Political parties must take this as a wake-up call. There is a need for stronger internal discipline, better coordination, and full adherence to electoral laws,” Mucunguzi emphasized.

He further advised those who witnessed or were affected by electoral malpractice to seek redress through the courts rather than resorting to violence.

“If there’s evidence of fraud or irregularities, the courts are the proper avenue. Don’t take the law into your own hands,” he added.

EC also reiterated its commitment to a peaceful and credible 2026 general election, though it admitted enforcement mechanisms remain limited.

Mucunguzi called on all stakeholders—political leaders, candidates, and voters—to take individual and collective responsibility for ensuring order during the electoral process.

“We don’t want to see this violence repeated in 2026. But we can’t do it alone. Everyone has a role to play in protecting the integrity of the vote.”

The recent primaries have sparked public concern, with many Ugandans questioning how secure the upcoming elections will be if internal party contests are already turning deadly.
