Cervical Cancer: Civil society urges women to embrace regular screening

Civil society organisations launched a cycling campaign over the weekend as one of the activities aimed at raising awareness about breast and cervical cancer among women.

Sylvia Nakamya, the executive director of Rays of Hope Hospice in Jinja noted the run is intended to raise funds to help screen women for cervical and breast cancer.

She called upon all the women in the country to embrace early medical checkups so that the disease is detected early enough in a bid to fight it before it spreads to all parts of the body.

"We urge all women to go for early checkups because it is every vital for you to go for cancer screening and know how your body is standing," she said.

She noted that regular cervical cancer screening is the way to identify abnormal changes in the cells of the cervix at an early age hence providing immediate solutions to fight it before the situation worsens.

She called upon the public and sponsors to give all the necessary assistance to the patients with cancer including clothes as one way of making them feel comfortable in the society.

Nakamya said there is need to get support to treat and care for the ladies who have breast and cervical cancer noting that there are many women with cancer that need financial support.

"Wee have to raise resources to be able to screen the ladies so that we can get those who have cervical cancer early enough for easy treatment,"she noted.
