The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF), Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, supervised final preparations for the nation’s 63rd Independence Day celebrations at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds on Tuesday.

Muhoozi commended UPDF units for their discipline, precision, and coordination, noting “remarkable progress since the introduction of the new parade format.”

“Parades are not merely ceremonial; they are a reflection of discipline, unity, and national strength. Our goal is to inspire pride among Ugandans and ensure that every national event demonstrates the professionalism and excellence of our forces,” he said.

The CDF also revealed that his proposal to centralize key national ceremonies, including Heroes Day and Independence Day, at Kololo had been approved by the President.

He cited improved efficiency, consistency, and coordination in organizing these events as key reasons for the decision.

“This decision reflects our intent to streamline and elevate these symbolic occasions. Other national commemorations, such as Tarehe Sita, will continue to rotate across the country to maintain engagement with local communities,” Muhoozi said.

Since assuming office in March last year, the four-star general has embarked on a comprehensive reform program to enhance the aesthetics, structure, and significance of military parades.

Changes include revamped drills, newly composed military songs, and a revised ceremonial dress code, which now requires female soldiers to wear skirts instead of trousers during official parades—a move aimed at restoring traditional military elegance.

His reforms have drawn praise from President Museveni, who commended the CDF during last year’s Independence celebrations in Busia for introducing a shorter, more organized, and impactful parade format that resonated with both the public and participants.

As part of the preparations, Muhoozi also lauded military bands and drill commanders for their dedication and urged them to uphold the highest performance standards during the upcoming ceremony.

“The new parade drills we introduced last year have now been mastered through consistent training and teamwork. This reflects the discipline, coordination, and professionalism that define Uganda’s armed forces,” he said.

This year’s celebrations come as Uganda positions its security forces at the heart of national transformation, ahead of the 2026 general elections.
