Katete Bridge has been closed to vehicles for months.

Frustrations is boiling in Mbarara City over the continuous closure of Katete Bridge.

Authorities closed down the bridge about three weeks ago after part of it caved in.

The closure of the bridge has since affected businesses and general transport, forcing residents to mount pressure on the city leadership. They have been demanding an explanation on the way forward since the only alternative route is too far from the central business district.

The closed bridge connects Katete, one of the fastest growing suburbs in Mbarara City, and the central business district.

Authorities put roadblocks on the bridge leaving a few pathways for boda boda cyclists. Motorists from Katete now have to pass via Nyamitanga - which is close to 5km - to access Mbarara town.

This has seen majority park their cars due to high fuel costs.

Besides, businesses in Katete are currently struggling and majority of the traders are now threatening to vacate the area.

Much as the bridge was only left for cyclists and pedestrians, the state under which it is isn't safe for the users.

Traders decry that much as they have been patient enough for 3 weeks, the city authorities are yet to respond to this emergency.

Robert Kakyebezi, the Mbarara City mayor, says they have severally written to the Ministry of Works to respond to the emergency and are yet to come to the ground.

However, the mayor noted that a supplementary budget of Shs5.7 billion has already been put into this coming financial year to have the bridge refurbished as they construct a new permanent bridge.

This bridge has been aiding easy connections to Isingiro District and it is estimated that over 5,0000 people have been crossing this bridge on a daily basis.

Kakyebezi apologised to the users of this road but asked them to be patient for a while as government embarks on renovation and construction of a new bridge.
