In Dida Village, Kisoko Sub-county in Tororo District, a remarkable leadership story continues to unfold around 84-year-old Onyango Odongo, who has served as the area LC1 chairperson for nearly four decades.
Odongo’s sprawling homestead, situated on three acres of land, is one of the most recognizable compounds in the area. Home to his seven wives and 81 children, the residence resembles a small village and has become closely tied to both his personal identity and political influence.
In the recently concluded National Resistance Movement (NRM) internal elections, Odongo was returned unopposed after no challenger emerged to contest against him.
He attributes his longevity in leadership to what he describes as dedicated service to the community.
“My good work for the people has kept me here. Whenever there is a government program, I inform them on time, whether it is mosquito net distribution, PDM or other benefits,” Odongo said.
Having held the LC1 position since 1986, when the NRM government came to power, Odongo says he remains committed to leadership and sees no reason to step aside.
“I have no problem with that. Even if elections take 10 years, my people still trust me and will vote for me because I have always been there for them,” he said while commenting on delays in village elections.
Odongo further described his leadership as part of the historical foundation of the ruling government.
“I cannot leave leadership now. We are the ones who brought the NRM government, so I cannot leave my seat for anyone. This is until my death,” he added.
Despite his popularity, opinions within the community remain divided. Some residents argue that his political dominance is strengthened by the sheer size of his family, with many voters directly related to him.
“His family population contributes greatly to his success because he has a very large family, running into hundreds,” said resident Osinde Zebilon.
Others, however, defend his leadership and describe him as a disciplined and impartial administrator who prioritizes peace and justice.
“He does not tolerate crime. Even if you are his child and you are found with a stolen item, you will be taken to jail. People respect him for bringing peace,” said resident Moris Musuguya.
Another resident, Olowo, said Odongo’s influence extends beyond village leadership.
“The community appreciates his service socially, politically, and economically. Some people even wish he could become LCV chairperson,” he noted.
Although Odongo commands significant influence in Dida Village, he also faces limitations linked to his lack of formal education. He did not attend primary school and relies heavily on his secretary for documentation and record keeping while he concentrates on administrative and community leadership duties.
Even so, Onyango Odongo remains one of the most recognizable and enduring local leaders in the area, with a legacy that continues to shape community life and politics in Dida Village.
