Salvation Hill: A Spiritual Haven Rising Along the Tororo–Kampala Highway

Rising prominently along the Tororo–Kampala highway, Salvation Hill is crowned with a towering cross visible from miles away—an enduring symbol of faith that continues to draw thousands of believers each year.

For many Christians, especially during the Lenten season, the hill is more than a physical landmark; it is a deeply spiritual destination. Pilgrims gather here to worship Jesus Christ, reflecting on His suffering and sacrifice on the cross.

The journey, however, is far from easy.
With a steep and physically demanding climb ahead, most believers begin their ascent in the early hours of the morning. Despite the challenge, their determination remains unwavering, driven by faith and the hope of spiritual renewal.

Seeking to understand what makes the hill so significant, Nile Post visited Salvation Hill to witness firsthand the experiences along its rugged paths.

Along the way, pilgrims encounter 15 prayer stations, each representing the Way of the Cross. At every stop, believers pause in solemn prayer, reflecting on the final journey of Christ. The atmosphere is deeply spiritual, marked by quiet devotion and personal introspection.

Beyond the prayer stations, the hill reveals another unique feature—its caves.
To many Christians, these caves are considered sacred spaces believed to carry blessings. Some pilgrims collect water from them, often arriving with jerrycans and bottles, convinced of its spiritual significance.

“Once you are here, your problems are half solved,” says Abbo Eriseba, a devoted believer.

Guided by a strong belief in deliverance at the foot of the cross, many spend over an hour moving through all the stations before finally reaching the summit. There, beneath the towering cross, they engage in deep, personal prayer.

According to Fr. Paul Santosh, the parish priest, the hill transcends religious boundaries.

“People who come here are from different religions, but they all come to communicate with their Lord. We have heard countless testimonies. This place is truly holy,” he explains.

Yet Salvation Hill is not only a spiritual sanctuary. For some, it offers adventure and breathtaking scenery. At the summit, visitors are rewarded with sweeping panoramic views stretching across the surrounding landscape—an experience that continues to attract even international tourists.

“I really like this place. It has a very beautiful view at the top. I enjoyed climbing it,” says Mikael Amsing, a visitor from France.

Despite its beauty and significance, local leaders believe the site remains largely underutilized.

“This place is still largely untapped. Even schools may not fully appreciate how beautiful it is. The district needs to do more to promote it—it has the potential to generate local revenue,” notes Dr. Sarah Kaweesa, Executive Director of Rocha Uganda.

However, concerns about poor management persist. During his visit, Amsing pointed out environmental neglect, citing litter scattered across the hill.

“The place is poorly managed. Look at the bottles and debris everywhere. Authorities should take this place seriously,” he adds.

Established in 2002 by Father Mathew Shabel, then parish priest of Sacred Heart Church in Tororo, Salvation Hill was envisioned as a place to draw Christians closer to salvation.

More than two decades later, that mission remains alive—etched into every step taken up the hill, every prayer whispered at its stations, and every believer who leaves feeling spiritually renewed.

Yet beyond its sacred identity lies an untapped opportunity—one that, if carefully developed, could transform Salvation Hill into not only a center of faith but also a beacon of tourism and community growth.
