KISORO — The Director General of Uganda Investment Authority (UIA), Robert Mukiza, has been appointed patron of Mutolere SC Kisoro, a move the club hopes will accelerate its transformation into a professional football institution and a regional ambassador.

The second-tier Fufa Big League side announced Mukiza’s appointment on Thursday, saying he had accepted to serve as the club’s patron effective immediately.

The appointment comes as Mutolere prepares for the 2026/27 Fufa Big League season, with the club management seeking to build a sustainable football project rooted in strategic growth and community identity.

While Mukiza’s role does not necessarily mean direct financial investment into the club, his appointment brings experience from his work promoting investment, strategic ventures and institutional growth through the Uganda Investment Authority.

Mutolere’s Commercial and Sponsorship Director, Stephen Muneza, said the club expects Mukiza’s guidance and expertise to be valuable as it seeks to establish itself as more than just a football team.

“We are proud to welcome Mr Mukiza to the club and look forward to benefiting from his guidance, mentorship, strategic counsel and steadfast support as we continue to build a strong, professional and sustainable football club,” the club said in a statement.

Muneza said the club is also awaiting approval from the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (Fufa) to change its name from Mutolere SC Kisoro to SC Volcanoes Kisoro.

The proposed rebrand is aimed at positioning the club as an ambassador for Kisoro District and the wider Kigezi region, using football to promote tourism, investment and community development.

“Through football, we have a unique opportunity to showcase the beauty and potential of the Kigezi region to audiences across the country,” Muneza said.

He added that competing in the Fufa Big League will give the club a national platform as it travels to different parts of Uganda, allowing it to showcase Kisoro’s attractions, including the mountain gorillas, Virunga Volcanoes, lakes, hills and cultural heritage.

“Our vision is for SC Volcanoes Kisoro to become more than a football club; we aspire to be a proud ambassador for tourism, investment and community development, using sport to tell the story of one of Africa’s most remarkable destinations,” he said.

Mutolere’s rise has already captured attention after the club, formed only months earlier under former Uganda Cranes player Patrick Ochan, produced one of the biggest shocks in the Stanbic Uganda Cup.

In February, the Kisoro-based side eliminated then-Uganda Premier League outfit Wakiso Giants in the Round of 64 after winning 4-3 on penalties following a 2-2 draw at Mashaka Playground.

Wakiso Giants had taken control of the match after goals from Samson Kasozi and Pius Wanji gave them a two-goal lead, but Mutolere staged a dramatic comeback through Julius Lukyamuzi and Sunny Kaija to force the shootout.

The victory marked a remarkable achievement for a young club still finding its footing and highlighted the potential behind the Mutolere project.

With Mukiza now joining the club’s leadership structure and plans underway for a new identity as SC Volcanoes Kisoro, the club hopes to combine football success with a broader mission of promoting the region and attracting partnerships.
