JINJA CITY | Celebrations turned tragic on Tuesday night when an Arsenal fan lost his life in a fatal accident following the club’s emphatic 3-0 victory over Real Madrid in the Champions League champions.

The Uefa Champions League quarter-final match saw Arsenal dismantle the Spanish giants and record 15-time winners, igniting wild celebrations among fans in Jinja City and other parts of the country.

However, at Mafubira Trading Centre along the Jinja-Kamuli Highway, the joy was short-lived.

Witnesses say the unidentified fan, overwhelmed by excitement, jumped on a motorcycle shortly after the final whistle and began riding recklessly while exhibiting dangerous stunts.

The joyride ended in disaster when he crashed into a stationary truck parked at the roadside.

He sustained fatal injuries and was rushed to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital, where he was confirmed dead.

Kiira Region Police spokesperson James Mubi confirmed the incident but said the identity of the deceased is being withheld pending further investigations.

The 3-0 home win put Arsenal in prime position to eject the defending champions over two legs and progress to the semi-finals of competition.

Arsenal have never won the Champions League, Europe's biggest club competition. The last time they came closest goes back to 2006 when they lost 2-1 to Barcelona at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, Paris.

And while the lack of proper history in the competition would make them celebrate the win even at a quarter-final stage, their fans in Uganda have appeared to take the euphoria too far one too many times.

This latest incident adds to a growing list of tragic or chaotic celebrations by Arsenal fans in Uganda.

In 2023, several Arsenal supporters were arrested in Jinja City after staging an unauthorized procession following the team’s win over Manchester United in the English Premier League.

The group, adorned in club colours and chanting victory songs, marched through the streets before being intercepted by police and detained at Jinja Central Police Station.

Two other fans were reportedly killed in separate celebratory incidents, including one fatal motorcycle crash in Arua and a stabbing involving a rival fan.

One of the most shocking incidents occurred that same year in Lukaya, Masaka District, when 26-year-old Arsenal fan John Ssenyonga was fatally shot by a private security guard.

The tragedy unfolded late in the night as fans continued celebrating deep into the early hours, causing unrest around a local business premises.

According to witnesses, an argument broke out when revellers became rowdy, prompting the guard to open fire.

Local authorities have continually urged football lovers to celebrate responsibly and avoid unlawful assemblies or risky behaviour.

In recent statements, police have emphasized the importance of safeguarding lives even in moments of elation.

“While football unites communities and brings joy to many, celebrations must not endanger lives or disrupt public order,” SP Mubi said in a press briefing earlier this year.

“We urge fans to remain cautious and considerate of others.”

As investigations into Tuesday night’s fatal accident continue, authorities are expected to intensify enforcement efforts around major sporting events to prevent further loss of life.
