Traffic and business activities were disrupted across several parts of Nansana Division as aspiring Local Council I (LC1) chairpersons turned up in large numbers for nominations, each accompanied by enthusiastic supporters seeking to demonstrate their popularity.
The nomination exercise attracted lively processions in Kazo, Nabweru and Nansana, where roads were clogged by supporters, motorcycle convoys and youth groups escorting candidates to nomination centres.
Some aspirants were carried on the shoulders of their supporters, while others arrived in long motorcycle convoys, causing traffic congestion and slowing business activities in the affected areas.
Yusuf Ssempagama Kaye, who is contesting for the Nabweru South Cell II LC1 chairperson seat, said he joined the race because he believes the current leadership has failed to improve residents' welfare.
"I have offered myself to rescue this village because residents have not benefited from the current leadership," Ssempagama said. "I believe it is time for new leadership that responds to the people's needs."
James Kizito, an aspirant for the Lugoba II village chairperson seat, said he is seeking another term to continue serving the community.
"I have returned to seek another term so that I can continue extending better services to our residents," Kizito said.
In Kazo Muganzirwaza, Ismail Kigozi entertained supporters with dance performances as he was carried shoulder-high during his procession. He said his leadership experience makes him the best candidate to maintain peace and security in the area.
"I have the experience needed to keep our village peaceful and secure," Kigozi said. "I ask residents to entrust me with the responsibility of leading them."
The nomination exercise, which is being conducted by the Electoral Commission, marks the formal entry of candidates into the race ahead of the forthcoming LC1 elections. Campaigns are expected to follow the completion of nominations before residents cast their votes.
