The President General of the Democratic Party, Norbert Mao, has officially declared his bid for Speaker of the next Parliament, announcing that his nationwide consultation phase has concluded.
Addressing the media, Mao said he had gathered sufficient views and support from across the country to inform his decision to enter the race for the top legislative seat.
“The consultation phase is now over. I have listened to Ugandans from different regions, and I am ready to offer myself for the position of Speaker,” Mao said.
He described corruption as Uganda’s biggest challenge, arguing that it has become deeply entrenched among individuals in positions of authority.
“Corruption today is not about small bribes. It involves huge sums of money that undermine service delivery and erode public trust in institutions,” he said.
Mao maintained that, if entrusted with the Speaker’s office, he would prioritise accountability, transparency and institutional integrity within Parliament.
He said the legislature must reclaim its oversight role and ensure that public resources are managed responsibly.
However, the Democratic Party leader asked supporters and party members not to actively campaign for him, saying he possesses the qualifications, experience and track record necessary to contest for the position.
“I do not need anyone to campaign for me. My record and credentials speak for themselves,” he said.
Mao now joins a growing list of aspirants eyeing the Speakership in the next Parliament, setting the stage for what is expected to be a competitive race for one of the most influential offices in Uganda’s governance structure.
The Speaker presides over parliamentary proceedings, guides legislative business and plays a critical role in shaping the tone and independence of the House.
