The National Resistance Movement (NRM) lawyer, Maj (Rtd) Pollar Awich, has stressed the importance of a transparent and orderly delegates conference ahead of the party’s first Central Executive Committee (CEC) elections conducted via a “lining up” system rather than the traditional secret ballot.
Speaking on Next Big Talk on Next Radio on Monday, Pollar said a successful delegates conference is one that achieves its agenda, facilitates smooth discussions in a safe environment, and encourages active participation from all delegates.
“The use of money in unscrupulous ways, such as bribing delegates, is highly discouraged,” Awich said.
“Candidates found culpable will face disqualification because it does not align with the party’s code of conduct. We are the only political party with a registered code of conduct deposited at the Electoral Commission.”
Awich also addressed concerns surrounding the “lining up” voting method, noting that while it aims to streamline the process, it carries risks of intimidation and vote-buying if not properly managed.
“I would want to address the mischief associated with lining up as a mode of voting, such as intimidation and the use of money, while also improving the protection of voters,” he added.
His remarks follow an NRM Electoral Commission meeting on August 12, 2025, which brought together aspiring CEC candidates to discuss preparations and compliance with party rules.
The decision to adopt the lining-up system stems from a 2020 party resolution. While some critics cite its potential vulnerability to manipulation, NRM leadership insists proper safeguards will ensure a free and fair election.
The party continues to emphasize adherence to its code of conduct, warning that any attempts to influence delegates through bribery or intimidation will attract strict disciplinary action.
