The State Minister for Tourism who also doubles as the NRM vice chairperson for Central region, Godfrey Kiwanda Sssuubi has taken a jibe at Robert Kyagulanyi also known as Bobi Wine and his National Unity Platform party over their people power slogan.
Since coming to the political scene less than five years ago, Kyagulanyi has emphasized the power of the people to decide the affairs of the country in what he termed as people power, other than a small group of people taking charge of the country.
The idea has won support to Kyagulanyi in many parts of the country especially among the youths.
However, speaking during the function to unveil a 25- man team that will spearhead campaigns to canvass votes for President Museveni in the forthcoming 2021 elections, Kiwanda boasted that the real people power is in the ruling NRM party.
“National Unity Platform is a slogan movement. The true people power is in NRM. If you want to see real people power, come to NRM,”Kiwanda said.
Commenting on the just concluded party primaries, Kiwanda said whereas the ruling NRM party allowed members to elect their own flag bearers, the National Unity Platform has to get an election management committee that had to choose flag bearers, a thing he said doesn’t reflect people power.
“When selecting our flag bearers, we had to come to you the supporters in the primaries. These people are just in slogans. These people have people power in slogans and not in actions. Their people power is not practical,” he said.
The National Unity Platform has been blamed by some members of the public over the manner it handled the issue of choosing its flag bearers.
Whereas many advocated for an election, the NUP spokesperson, Joel Ssenyonyi said being a young party, having a committee to choose flag bearers is what they could afford but noted it showed that they are always open to change for the better.
