The Uganda National Bureau of Standards has asked the responsible authorities to strengthen the entry points at the DR Congo- Uganda border because they are used by some traders to smuggle goods.
This follows the confiscation of cosmetics worth millions of shillings in downtown Kampala last week in an operation carried out by UNBS and Police.
UNBS officials said traders in fake products were becoming rich at the expense of the health of Ugandans. It is believed that many of these fake cosmetics, especially lightening creams are the leading cause of skin cancer.
During the operation some traders managed to sneak away. They closed their shops and took off.
But the police managed to break the padlocks t this did not deter the determined police and the officials of UNBS to break the padlocks.
The confiscated cosmetics under the brand name, Caroline, were packed in bags and taken to be destroyed.
This is not the first time the same products have been banned on the Ugandan market but they find their way on the market thanks largely to our porous borders.
