Probe grills LCI chairman over connivance in land wrangle
The land inquiry led by Justice Catherine Bamugemereire yesterday grilled the former chairperson LC I Nsololo village in Mubende District, Edward Ssemanda to answer queries about a 350 acre piece of land.
The appearance of Ssemanda before the commission,follows complaints filed by the Nsololo residents to the commission accusing him of conniving with a one Hajjati Fatima Ndagire to take the land.
When asked by the commission what kind of relationship he had with Ndagire, Ssemanda replied that there wasn't any.
He said Ndagire had promised to give back the land to the children of late Jajja Nabisinsigiri but later sold it to the Indian Manusuli.
Ssemanda was picked from prison to appear before the probe. He told the commssion that he ended up in prison because he tried to stop Ndagire from grabbing the land.
The commission noted that many land conflicts in Mubende are being triggered by selfish interests amongst land administrators especially in cases where the original owner dies.
Justice Bamugemereire also expressed worry that many administrators are denying the girl child the right to inherit their parents' land because of the deep rooted traditions that segregate the girl child yet sometimes they are the only legitimate survivors of deceased land owners.
