Rt. Rev. Dr. Vitalis Job Ekuru has been consecrated and enthroned as the fourth Anglican Bishop of Katakwa Diocese in Busia County, Kenya, in a ceremony attended by senior church leaders, political figures and dignitaries from Kenya and Uganda.
The solemn ceremony, held on Sunday, July 26, 2026, was presided over by the Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK), Jackson Ole Sapit, and was graced by Kenyan President William Ruto, Uganda’s Vice President Jessica Alupo and other religious and political leaders.
Bishop Ekuru takes over from Bishop John Ekude, who retired after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 65.
The ceremony marked the formal transfer of spiritual authority to Bishop Ekuru through an elaborate Anglican consecration service that included prayers, examination of faith, the laying on of hands, anointing with holy oil and the presentation of symbols of episcopal office.
During the service, Archbishop Ole Sapit reminded the new bishop that his calling was anchored in servant leadership, urging him to safeguard church doctrine, promote unity and care for the faithful.
“As a bishop you are called to lead in serving and caring for the people of God… You are to maintain the church’s discipline, guard her faith and promote her mission in the world,” Archbishop Sapit said.
The Archbishop further reminded Bishop Ekuru of his responsibility to watch over and pray for those entrusted to his care.
“You are to know your people and be known by them. You are to ordain and commission new ministers, guiding those who serve with you and enabling them to fulfil their ministry,” Sapit said.
Archbishop Sapit presented Bishop Ekuru with a Bible, a ring and a pastoral staff previously used by Bishop Ekude, describing the items as symbols of his responsibility to serve as a shepherd to the flock entrusted to him.
President Ruto congratulated Bishop Ekuru upon his consecration and pledged continued cooperation between the government and faith-based institutions in delivering services to Kenyans.
Vice President Jessica Alupo delivered a message from President Yoweri Museveni to President Ruto and praised the contribution of faith-based organisations in areas including healthcare, education, wealth creation and promoting moral values among citizens.
Alupo was accompanied by the Minister of Ethics and Integrity, Rose Lilly Akello; Minister of State in the Office of the Vice President, Diana Mutasingwa; and the Teso Cultural leader, Emormor Paul Sande Emolot, alongside his wife, Her Majesty Juliet Among Emolot, among other dignitaries.
In his acceptance remarks, Bishop Ekuru pledged to uphold the Constitution of the Anglican Church of Kenya and lead Katakwa Diocese with “truth, justice and love.”
Ministerial Service
Rt. Rev. Dr. Ekuru is an experienced priest, academic and administrator with more than 20 years of experience in ministry, education and leadership.
He currently serves in several leadership positions, including Chairman of the Diocesan House of Clergy, Archdeacon of Chamasiri Archdeaconry, adjunct lecturer at St. Paul’s University and lecturer at the Carlile College Katakwa Satellite Campus.
Born on August 5, 1972, at Aburi Village, Kaborom Location, Bungoma County, Bishop Ekuru is the third-born among eight children of Mr. Peter Joshua Omai and Mary Auchokoit.
