The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has urged the kingdom’s subjects to courageously protect their language, culture and traditions while raising children with values that promote a responsible and united society.
Mayiga’s message was delivered by the Second Deputy Katikkiro, Robert Waggwa Nsibirwa, during a thanksgiving Mass at Lubaga Cathedral to mark the 33rd anniversary of the coronation of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II.
The Mass was led by Rev. Fr. Achilles Mayanja, the Parish Priest of Lubaga Parish and Administrator of Lubaga Cathedral.
In his homily, Fr. Mayanja commended the Kabaka for championing programmes aimed at improving the welfare of the people of Buganda throughout his 33-year reign.
“We thank His Majesty for the initiatives that have transformed the lives of his people throughout the 33 years of his reign,” Fr. Mayanja said.
He encouraged Christians to avoid actions that distance them from God and called on believers to approach their responsibilities with integrity and commitment.
“Let us shun actions that separate us from God and give dignity and value to the work entrusted to us,” he said.
Fr. Mayanja also welcomed government initiatives aimed at improving communities but called for more efforts to address challenges affecting Ugandans.
He encouraged citizens to actively participate in choosing Local Council One (LC1) leaders, saying community involvement is important in strengthening governance.
In his message, Mayiga thanked God for sustaining Kabaka Mutebi throughout his 33 years on the throne, describing the period as one that has helped restore confidence among the Baganda while strengthening unity, development and cultural identity.
“These 33 years have been dedicated to restoring the confidence of the people of Buganda through promoting unity, development, cultural values and preparing them for the future,” Mayiga said.
The Katikkiro also appreciated religious leaders from different faiths for their continued prayers, support and partnership with the Buganda Kingdom.
This year’s coronation anniversary is being commemorated under the theme: “Let Us Be Courageous in Preserving Our Culture.”
The main celebrations are scheduled for July 31 at Watoto Church in Bweyogerere.
