Parliament on Tuesday paid its final tribute to former Second Deputy Prime Minister and Adjumani West MP Gen. (Rtd) Moses Ali, describing him as a nationalist, mentor and statesman whose contributions helped shape Uganda's peace and governance.
During a special sitting, legislators from both the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and the Opposition praised the veteran politician, fondly known as the "Cock of West Nile", for his decades of service to the country.
The casket bearing Gen. Ali's body arrived at Parliament at 7:30am and was received by Speaker Jacob Oboth-Oboth before being placed in the foyer, where it lay in state ahead of the day's proceedings.
The special sitting commenced at 10am under the chairmanship of Speaker Oboth-Oboth, who commended President Museveni for entrusting Gen. Ali with several senior government positions over the years.
"His Excellency the President appointed him to serve in key positions where he touched the lives of many Ugandans," the Speaker said.
The casket was later moved into the parliamentary chamber, where members took turns paying tribute to their late colleague.
Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja moved the motion seeking a parliamentary resolution to honour Gen. Ali, describing him as a leader of exceptional character.
"The late Gen. Moses Ali was a distinguished, resilient, transparent, accountable, courageous and committed leader. He served this country with honour," Nabbanja said.
Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi seconded the motion and urged leaders to emulate Gen. Ali's commitment to public service.
"We should emulate the late Gen. Moses Ali by respecting the rule of law and serving the people with integrity," Ssenyonyi said.
Vice President Jessica Alupo described the late general as a disciplined military officer and mentor who nurtured many young leaders.
"He was a disciplined military officer and a politician who mentored many young leaders. He leaves an indelible mark in Uganda's history," Alupo said.
Several ministers and legislators, including First Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, also paid tribute, describing Gen. Ali as a dedicated public servant, a champion of peace and a leader who remained committed to the development of the West Nile region.
Gen. Ali will be laid to rest on Wednesday in Adjumani District.
He is the second member of the 12th Parliament to die, after former Kalangala District Woman MP Hellen Nakimuli.
