Deputy Speaker of Parliament and President of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) Parliamentary Assembly, Thomas Tayebwa, has held bilateral talks with Africa-EU Parliamentary Assembly Chairperson Hilde Vautmans at the European Parliament in Brussels.
The meeting focused on issues of mutual interest between Uganda and the European Union, including strengthening bilateral cooperation, regional peace and governance.
Tayebwa was accompanied by Uganda's Ambassador to the European Union, Mirjam Blaak.
During the meeting, Tayebwa conveyed greetings from President Yoweri Museveni and invited Vautmans to visit Uganda to further deepen collaboration and strategic partnerships between Uganda and the European Union.
He also highlighted Uganda's governance progress, its contribution to containing the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the country's continued efforts to promote peace through dialogue in the Great Lakes region and beyond.
"The European Union has proved to be a very reliable partner for Uganda over the last 50 years, and with the Samoa Agreement realigning our relationship from aid to partnership, I only see this relationship growing stronger and stronger with a clear impact on our people," Tayebwa said.
Uganda and the European Union have maintained decades of cooperation across governance, trade, development, health and infrastructure, with both sides seeking to expand the relationship under the Samoa Agreement, which places greater emphasis on equal partnership and shared priorities.
