Residents across Nakaseke District have called on aspiring village leaders to prioritise the interests of their communities once elected, accusing some current leaders of failing to deliver essential services despite being entrusted with public office.
The residents made the appeal as Uganda prepares for the election of grassroots leaders, including LC I chairpersons, LC II representatives and women leaders.
During visits to several villages in Kapeka Sub-county and Kiwoko Town Council, residents were seen turning up to register as voters ahead of the upcoming polls.
Many expressed frustration with some outgoing leaders, accusing them of abandoning their responsibilities shortly after assuming office.
“Most leaders forget about the people immediately after being elected. Instead of working to improve our communities, they are only interested in receiving the small allowances attached to their positions,” one resident said.
Another resident, David Kamya Karuhanga, said poor leadership had contributed to increasing insecurity in some areas, particularly affecting women and other vulnerable groups.
“Some local leaders have neglected their responsibility to oversee security in our communities. This has created opportunities for criminals to target women and other vulnerable residents,” Kamya said.
Residents also urged incoming leaders to ensure that government poverty alleviation and development programmes benefit intended beneficiaries without discrimination, corruption or favouritism.
“The next leaders should make sure that government programmes benefit ordinary citizens and help improve our livelihoods,” another resident said.
The residents welcomed the forthcoming elections, saying they provide an opportunity to choose new leaders, as some current office bearers have allegedly lost the confidence of the communities they serve.
The Mayor of Kiwoko Town Council, Paul Mugisha, encouraged residents to register and actively participate in the elections to choose leaders committed to improving service delivery.
“I urge all eligible residents to register and take part in the elections so that we can elect leaders who will genuinely serve the interests of our communities,” Mugisha said.
Meanwhile, some aspiring LC I chairpersons acknowledged challenges during their campaigns but said they remained committed to addressing residents’ concerns if elected. They also highlighted community projects they have undertaken, saying the initiatives demonstrate their commitment to improving the welfare of residents.
The village elections are expected to play a key role in strengthening grassroots governance, promoting accountability and improving service delivery at the local level across Nakaseke District.
