Katikkiro Mayiga Inspects Final Restoration Works at Kasubi Tombs

The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has inspected the final improvement works at the Kasubi Tombs as the Kingdom concludes the last phase of restoring the UNESCO World Heritage Site to the required standard.

Mayiga, accompanied by officials from Mengo, toured the site to assess the remaining minor works following the official reopening of the tombs in December last year. Although the restoration project was largely completed, several finishing touches are still being undertaken to enhance the visitor experience.

Upon arrival, the Katikkiro first entered the main mausoleum, Muzibu-Azaala-Mpanga, where he paid his respects to the former Kings of Buganda before receiving a briefing on the progress of the remaining works.

He commended the quality of the restoration and thanked the princes and princesses who have actively participated in maintaining and improving the traditional structures within the royal burial grounds.

Mayiga noted that while the restoration is substantially complete, continuous maintenance will be necessary to preserve the cultural and historical significance of the site.

“Although the major restoration works are complete, we must continue maintaining and beautifying the Kasubi Tombs so that they remain at the standard they deserve,” Mayiga said.

The Katikkiro also explained why the compound will retain its traditional earthen surface, emphasizing that it is part of preserving the authenticity and cultural heritage of the site.
