Sudan’s Peace Government Calls for Safe Humanitarian Corridors in El Obeid

The Council of Ministers of Sudan’s Peace Government has called for the protection of civilians and the establishment of safe humanitarian corridors in El Obeid, citing the worsening humanitarian situation and the urgent need to facilitate civilian movement and aid delivery.

In a statement released on Sunday, the government said it is closely coordinating with international and regional partners on measures aimed at protecting civilians, expanding humanitarian assistance, and creating secure routes for residents seeking to leave conflict-affected areas.

The statement welcomed ongoing engagement with the international community, particularly the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, the African Union, and the United Nations, saying their support is critical in implementing practical measures to safeguard civilians and ease humanitarian suffering.

The Peace Government reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safe, unhindered, and non-discriminatory delivery of humanitarian assistance, while urging the international community to support the establishment of humanitarian corridors that would allow civilians to relocate to safer areas and access essential services.

The Council also accused what it described as “army militias and terrorist brigades” of preventing civilians from leaving El Obeid, forcibly recruiting residents, using civilians as human shields, and continuing attacks on residential neighbourhoods with bombs and drones.

According to the statement, field reports indicate that restrictions on civilian movement remain in place, with residents allegedly being prevented from leaving the city and compelled to participate in military operations. The government said such actions constitute serious violations of international humanitarian law.

The Peace Government further maintained that an immediate and unconditional humanitarian ceasefire remains the most effective way to protect civilians, facilitate the delivery of humanitarian assistance, and allow for the evacuation of the wounded and the sick.

It also called on the international community to intensify pressure on what it referred to as the Muslim Brotherhood and its armed forces to accept a humanitarian ceasefire, accusing them of repeatedly rejecting international initiatives aimed at ending hostilities and protecting civilians.
