The decision was reached unanimously during a meeting of the IRCU Council of Presidents held on June 23, 2026, ushering in new leadership for one of Uganda's most influential interfaith organisations.
Bishop Zziwa succeeds The Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, whose tenure as chairperson of the IRCU Council of Presidents has come to an end.
In a statement, the council paid tribute to Archbishop Kaziimba for his stewardship and commitment during his term of office.
"We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Archbishop Kaziimba for his dedicated leadership and guidance during his term," the statement said.
The council also congratulated Bishop Zziwa on his election, expressing confidence in his ability to advance the organisation's mission of promoting interfaith cooperation, peace and national cohesion.
"We warmly congratulate Bishop Zziwa and wish him every success as he takes on this important role, leading IRCU in fulfilling its vision of a Godly, peaceful, united and prosperous Uganda," the statement added.
The Inter-Religious Council of Uganda brings together leaders from the country's major faith traditions and has played a central role in fostering interfaith dialogue, peacebuilding initiatives and social cohesion.
Over the years, the council has also been active in civic education, election observation, conflict resolution and advocacy on national issues affecting communities across Uganda.
Bishop Zziwa's election comes at a time when religious leaders continue to play a critical role in promoting peaceful coexistence, national development and collective action on social and governance challenges facing the country.
