Kabale District leaders have commissioned a Shs 317.5 million retaining wall at Kahondo Health Centre III in Maziba Sub-county to protect the facility from flooding and soil erosion.
The project, located in Rukore Village, Kahondo Parish, was constructed by Geses Uganda Limited and included compound paving, installation of guardrails, and implementation of environmental protection measures.
Kabale District Health Officer Dr. Gilbert Arinaitwe Mateeka said the retaining wall is a major improvement to the health centre’s infrastructure, as it will help safeguard the facility from environmental damage.
However, he noted that the health centre still faces challenges, including lack of reliable electricity because the area is not connected to the national power grid, limiting the delivery of some essential services.
Kabale Chief Administrative Officer Robert Mugabe commended the contractor for delivering quality work, saying the structure will protect the facility from destruction caused by floods and soil erosion.
District LCV Chairperson Denis Nzeire Ndyomugyenyi urged residents living near the health centre to dig trenches around their homes to control surface runoff that could undermine the new structure.
He also praised health workers for their commitment to improving service delivery.
"Remain professional and report to duty on time. Government is committed to improving your welfare through staff housing and other support. I hereby direct the engineering department to construct more drainage channels around the facility to manage runoff water," Ndyomugyenyi said.
Deputy Resident District Commissioner for Kabale, Michael Kyakashari, asked residents to take ownership of the health facility and ensure proper maintenance of the new infrastructure.
He said government will continue investing in health infrastructure to improve access to quality healthcare services.
Kyakashari added that the development aligns with the fourth pillar of the National Resistance Movement Manifesto 2026–2031, which focuses on strengthening social service delivery and improving the quality of life for Ugandans.
