70 Police Stations Completed as Uganda Expands Grassroots Security Network

The Uganda Police Force has intensified efforts to improve security service delivery across the country through the Sub-County Policing Model, with plans to establish 200 police stations nationwide.

According to the Director of Interpol and International Relations, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Joseph Obwona, 70 police stations have already been completed, while construction of the remaining 130 is ongoing and nearing completion.

Obwona made the remarks while commissioning Kafu Police Station in Nakitoma Sub-county, Nakasongola District, on behalf of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Abbas Byakagaba.

He said the initiative is aimed at bringing police services closer to communities and strengthening crime prevention efforts at the grassroots level.

“In 2019, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni directed the Uganda Police Force to establish police stations in every sub-county after noting increasing crime levels across the country. The goal was to ensure that police services are accessible to all citizens and improve security in local communities,” Obwona said.

He added that the President directed that each station should be staffed with at least 18 police officers to enhance law enforcement and crime prevention.

According to Obwona, IGP Abbas Byakagaba operationalized the directive in 2025 by launching the construction of 200 police stations across the country.

During the commissioning of Kafu Police Station, Obwona announced the deployment of 10 police officers, two motorcycles, and one patrol vehicle to support operations.

He urged officers to use the resources responsibly and strictly for official duties.

“We do not want to hear cases where officers use government vehicles to travel to their villages. The vehicles and motorcycles provided must serve the purpose for which they were allocated — protecting communities and improving service delivery,” Obwona warned.

The Director of Logistics and Engineering, AIGP James Apora, said the project would have been completed earlier but faced several challenges, including transportation difficulties, limited availability of land in some areas, and the long distances to remote districts.

“Despite the challenges, significant progress has been made. We appreciate the communities and local leaders who offered land for these projects because their support has been critical to the success of this initiative,” Apora said.

Savannah Regional Police Commander Michael Kasigire said inadequate transport remains a major challenge affecting police operations in the region.

“Some stations are still waiting to receive the motorcycles that were promised. This has affected our ability to respond effectively to crimes such as cattle theft, which remains a challenge in some communities,” Kasigire said.

Meanwhile, Nakasongola Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Festus Bandeeba appealed to police authorities to establish another police station in Lwampanga Sub-county.

He explained that recurring floods have divided the sub-county into two sections, leaving thousands of residents without easy access to police services.

“The affected side of Lwampanga is home to more than 4,000 residents. We request the Police leadership to consider establishing another station there so that all residents can access security services without difficulty,” Bandeeba said.

One year into the implementation of the project, only two police stations have so far been commissioned in the Savannah Region, while several others remain under construction.

Authorities commended residents and local leaders who donated land for the stations, describing their contribution as vital in strengthening security infrastructure and improving access to police services across the region.
