The National Environment Management Authority (National Environment Management Authority) has honoured environmental champions across Uganda during the 3rd National Environment Sustainability Awards (NESA) 2026, held at Serena Hotel in Kampala.

The ceremony, held under the theme “Innovation for Climate Resilience,” brought together leaders from government, the private sector, academia, civil society, local governments and the media to celebrate efforts aimed at protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development.

The event was officiated by Minister of Water and Environment Maj. Gen. (Rtd.) Kahinda Otafiire as chief guest, highlighting government support for environmental conservation initiatives.

The keynote address was delivered by the Governor of the Bank of Uganda, Michael Atingi-Ego, who underscored the link between environmental sustainability and economic resilience, noting that climate-focused innovation is central to long-term national development.

NEMA Executive Director Barirega Akankwasah said the awards were meant to recognise innovation and commitment in environmental protection while encouraging wider participation in sustainability efforts.

“These awards are more than just a ceremony; they are a testament to the power of collective action and a celebration of the pioneers who are forging paths toward a healthier planet,” he said.

Dr Akankwasah added that in the face of climate change, innovation for resilience remains essential for Uganda’s survival and prosperity.

According to NEMA, winners were selected through a rigorous evaluation process involving expert assessment, field verification and due diligence to ensure transparency and fairness.

The awards covered a wide range of categories, including climate change research and innovation, biodiversity conservation, waste-to-resource initiatives, climate leadership, fragile ecosystem protection, low-carbon development, green manufacturing, pollution control technologies, environmental journalism, community-based climate resilience and sustainable finance.

NEMA said the awards aim not only to recognise excellence but also to inspire further innovation and strengthen national commitment to environmental sustainability.

The authority also thanked partners and stakeholders for their continued support in promoting environmental compliance, conservation and climate action across the country.

The event concluded with calls for sustained collaboration in addressing climate change challenges and building a more resilient and environmentally secure future for Uganda.
