The family of former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has said they are both relieved and deeply concerned after visiting him at Luzira Prison, where they claim he is experiencing severe body pain and health complications following his detention.

The visit, which took place at around 4pm, was the family’s first direct contact with Lukwago since his detention, and according to relatives, it revealed a weakened physical condition that has raised concern within the family.

Speaking to journalists after the visit, Lukwago’s wife, Zawedde Lubwama, said her husband appeared in significant pain and required urgent medical attention.

She alleged that he had suffered physical trauma, including ear-related complications she linked to repeated slapping while in an undisclosed location before being taken into police custody.

“I have found him weak, and his ears in pain because he has a condition known as tinnitus that is brought by exposure to repeated noise to the ear now due to the slappings he got while in the basement,” she said, adding that he continues to experience severe body pains.

Her account could not be independently verified.

Despite the concerns raised, the family said prison authorities at Luzira have provided medical attention, including access to doctors to attend to his condition.

“We found that they had gotten him doctors from Luzira,” she said.

The family also confirmed that authorities allowed them to provide a specialized mattress and deliver food to support his recovery and comfort during detention.

While expressing distress over his condition, the family said they were comforted by finally knowing his whereabouts after what they described as a period of uncertainty.

“As a family, we are relieved that at least we now know where he is,” Zawedde said.
