Residents of Kabale Municipality have raised concerns over damaged and uncovered walkways, saying they have become major safety hazards and accident hotspots.
The residents claim that several walkways have remained in a poor state for months without repairs from the responsible authorities, leading to frequent accidents involving pedestrians and other road users.
Speaking to Nile Post, boda boda riders Dismus Agaba and Christopher Agaba of Full Gospel Boda Boda Stage, together with Isaac Muyambi and Bright Tukwasibwe from Central Division in Kabale Municipality, said many residents have fallen into open holes left by the damaged walkways.
They described the uncovered sections as dangerous traps that expose pedestrians to injuries on a daily basis.
According to the residents, the continued neglect of the walkways raises concerns about the municipality’s commitment to maintaining public infrastructure and ensuring safety. They called for urgent intervention before more people are injured.
The residents also warned that the open walkways have become dumping grounds for waste, which could block drainage channels, worsen sanitation challenges, and increase the risk of flooding during the rainy season.
“Accumulated rubbish could block drainage channels, worsen sanitation, and increase flood risks during the rainy season,” the residents said.
They appealed to authorities to prioritize repairs and prevent further deterioration, saying timely action would reduce accidents and improve safety for pedestrians.
Responding to the concerns, Kabale Municipality Deputy Town Clerk Erick Sunday said the municipality had not yet received a fully documented report on the damaged walkways. However, he acknowledged the seriousness of the issue and assured residents that the matter would be followed up.
“I will inquire into the reported damages and assess the extent of the problem before determining the appropriate action. I encourage residents to continue reporting infrastructure challenges through the proper channels to enable effective responses,” Sunday said.
