RUBANDA — Police in Rubanda District are investigating a fatal road crash that claimed the life of a 32-year-old motorcyclist along the Kabale–Kisoro highway on Monday evening.
The deceased has been identified as Martin Muhereza, a resident of Muruhita Village in Hamurwa Sub-county, Rubanda District.
Muhereza was riding a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, registration number UMA 129LN, when he was involved in the crash at Mukyitenge Village, also in Hamurwa Sub-county.
According to police, the accident occurred at around 6pm when the motorcycle he was riding rammed into a white low-bed trailer, registration number UN 26013.
Speaking on the incident, regional police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime said preliminary investigations suggest that the rider was travelling at high speed and failed to negotiate a corner before crashing into the trailer.
“It’s alleged that the rider, now deceased, was riding at high speed and rammed into the trailer. He died instantly. Traffic Police rushed to the scene and conveyed the body to the mortuary for postmortem,” Tumushime said.
Muhereza had no safety helmet on, according to responders.
Police have since urged motorists, motorcyclists and other road users to observe speed limits and comply with traffic regulations to prevent similar tragedies.
“We continue to urge all road users to be mindful of speed limits and respect other road users. Abide by highway codes to avoid such tragedies,” Tumushime added.
Road crashes involving motorcycles remain a major concern across Uganda, with authorities frequently citing speeding, reckless riding and failure to observe traffic rules among the leading causes of fatalities.
Police said investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are ongoing.
