Oboth was elected Speaker of the 12th Parliament on May 25, 2026, replacing Among, while Tayebwa retained the position of Deputy Speaker.

The leadership transition followed weeks of political mobilization within the ruling National Resistance Movement, which endorsed both Oboth and Tayebwa ahead of the vote.

Among, who has served as Speaker since March 2022 following the death of former Speaker Jacob Oulanyah, leaves office after presiding over the 11th Parliament during a period marked by contentious legislative debates and increased public scrutiny over accountability and corruption in Parliament.

Oboth, the Member of Parliament for West Budama Central, secured victory during elections held at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, while Tayebwa retained his position with backing from senior ruling party figures and the NRM parliamentary caucus.
