Outgoing deputy speaker, Thomas Tayebwa has apologised to the nation over what he termed as lapses in the 11th parliament.
“Where we had a lapse as leaders, I want to take this opportunity to apologize to the nation on behalf of the leadership of the party, because that is where we had a lapse. It is where we didn't put some brakes, you know. We went on a pedestal, and we went beyond,” Tayebwa said.
He was on Sunday speaking to journalists following his endorsement by the NRM Central Executive Committee(CEC) and party caucus for the deputy speaker job.
Parliament has in recent days been blamed for allowing corruption breed within its precincts.
President Museveni has on several occasions warned Parliament and MPs against corruption, vowing decisive action against both those who solicit and those who receive bribes.
His remarks have come on the heels of reports of lawmakers and officials inflating budgets and demanding money from public servants to pass budgets.
Speaking on Sunday at State House in Entebbe, Tayebwa admitted that there were lapses but said these will be corrected.
“I really, want to apologize to the nation over what went wrong. And I do believe that working together, and without blaming anyone, but focusing on where we are going, we are going to change that institution in the shortest possible period,” he said.
He said he will work with the forthcoming speaker to correct any wrongs.
"We are going to transform this house. By the way, I can even put a deadline that house to reform it. I don't need more than one hour of decision making, to reform that house to change it completely, because I only need to follow processes," Tayebwa said.
