Uganda has been called upon to strengthen investment in reliable measurement systems as it accelerates its drive toward industrialisation, fair trade, and broader economic transformation.
Speaking during the World Metrology Day 2026 celebrations, the Executive Director of the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS), Eng. James N. Kasigwa, said accurate measurement remains central to ensuring fairness, safety, and quality across all sectors of the economy.
Kasigwa noted that metrology, the science of measurement, plays a critical role in supporting innovation, research, and value addition within Uganda’s expanding industrial base.
“Measurement is at the heart of development ensuring fairness, safety, and quality in every aspect of our lives,” Kasigwa said.
He added that Uganda’s industrial growth will increasingly depend on strong and reliable measurement infrastructure capable of supporting competitiveness and sustainable development.
“As Uganda advances industrially, investing in reliable measurement systems is essential for transparency, competitiveness, and sustainable growth,” he added.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, Lynette B. Bagonza, who served as Guest of Honour, emphasized that accurate measurement systems are vital in promoting accountability, consumer confidence, and fair trade practices.
“Accurate measurements are instruments of fairness, accountability, confidence, and economic transformation,” Bagonza said.
She further noted that reliable measurement systems are key to strengthening consumer protection, improving trust in regulatory systems, and enhancing Uganda’s competitiveness in international markets.
Bagonza also stressed that proper measurement standards ensure consumers receive the correct quantity and quality of goods and services while supporting Uganda’s broader industrialisation and export agenda.
This year’s World Metrology Day celebrations were held under the theme: “Metrology: Building Trust in Policy Making.”
