As Uganda prepares for the swearing-in ceremony of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni tomorrow at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, supporters of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) in Mukono have spent the day organising celebrations and mobilising residents to attend the event.
At the NRM offices in Mukono, party supporters gathered to finalise arrangements before later staging a procession through Mukono Town.
The procession, led by a brass band, moved through the streets as supporters sang songs in praise of the NRM and President Museveni.
Isa Kakande, a boda boda rider in Mukono Town, said thousands of motorcycle riders had been mobilised to celebrate the President’s victory, pointing to government support extended to their SACCO through a Shs400 million investment.
Another rider, Brian Mukasa, commended government for improving road infrastructure in Mukono, saying the upgrades have eased transport for riders.
He also noted that the installation of street lighting has reduced motorcycle theft, allowing riders to operate more confidently at night.
Meanwhile, Mayimuna Namwanje and other elderly residents appealed for special arrangements for senior citizens expected to attend the ceremony.
They said older persons often face challenges at large gatherings, including lack of seating, food shortages, theft of personal belongings, and mistreatment by some youths.
Other residents used the occasion to call on President Museveni to prioritise local concerns after taking office, particularly the Parish Development Model (PDM). They argued that many elderly people in Mukono have not yet benefited from the government programme.
Hajji Haruna Semakula, the NRM Chairperson for Mukono, said residents are eager to travel to Kololo to thank the President for what he described as significant developments in the district, especially road construction.
Semakula also announced that transport to Kololo would be provided free of charge for all residents wishing to attend the swearing-in ceremony. He added that celebrations would continue throughout the night at the party offices as supporters mark the occasion.
