Police Crack Down on Crime Hotspots in Kampala

Police in Kampala have arrested dozens of suspects in a sweeping crackdown targeting crime hotspots, as security agencies intensify operations against robberies, narcotics, and organized criminal activity across the metropolitan area.

The coordinated operations, conducted in Kabalagala, Kira, Old Kampala, and Wandegeya, focused on dismantling criminal networks operating in identified black spots.

Authorities say the arrests stem from intelligence-led raids on areas long associated with theft, drug distribution, and possession of suspected stolen property.

In Kira Division, 11 suspects were arrested in Kyaliwajjala, Namugongo, in connection with a string of robberies. Police recovered suspected stolen household items, narcotic substances, knives, and a pick axe believed to have been used in criminal activities.

Eight more suspects were apprehended in Old Kampala following operations in Nakulabye and Kasubi targeting narcotics outlets and criminal hideouts.

In Wandegeya, 15 suspects were arrested in areas including Kikoni and Old Mulago over alleged involvement in shop break-ins and unlawful late-night gatherings.

Additional suspects were arrested in Bukasa, Nsambya West, and Buyondo Zone over attacks on motorists. Police confirmed that some of those arrested have already been charged and are awaiting court appearance.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, said the operations are part of a broader strategy to disrupt criminal networks and restore public safety.

“We conducted a series of disruptive operations across various divisions aimed at curbing criminal activities, improving public safety, and dismantling criminal networks within the metropolitan area,” Owoyesigyire said.

He added that all suspects are undergoing screening and legal processing as investigations continue.

Meanwhile, police are investigating a separate incident in Kabalagala involving the death of a 36-year-old mason, Olowo Dominic, who was electrocuted in Kisasizi Zone, Kibuli Parish.

Authorities say the victim allegedly came into contact with a clothes-hanging wire that had become live.

His body was taken to City Mortuary Mulago for a postmortem as investigators work to establish the source of the electric current.

Owoyesigyire emphasized that similar enforcement operations will continue alongside community policing and routine patrols.

“We remain committed to sustained disruptive operations, community policing, and working closely with local leaders to ensure safety and security for all residents,” he said.
