Police in Masaka have arrested a journalist and two TikTok content creators over alleged publication of false information targeting Woman MP-elect Justine Nameere.
According to the Regional Police Spokesperson for the Greater Masaka region, Twaha Kasirye, the suspects have been identified as Frank Bwekumbule, a journalist with Impact FM, alongside TikTok users Frank Kagwa and Joseph Kikawa.
Kasirye said the trio allegedly posted videos on TikTok accusing Nameere of obtaining coffee seedlings from farmers without paying for them.
In the circulated footage, the suspects reportedly referred to the MP-elect using terms such as “thief,” “cheat,” and “fraudster.”
Police say the claims are false and defamatory, adding that the content was intended to tarnish Nameere’s reputation.
Kasirye explained that preliminary investigations found the allegations to be unsupported by evidence and maliciously shared on social media, prompting authorities to take action.
The suspects are currently in police custody as investigations continue.
Police have also warned members of the public, particularly social media users, against spreading unverified information online, cautioning that those found publishing defamatory or misleading content may face legal consequences.
