A construction worker was electrocuted while working on an unfinished building in Kisoga village in Ntenjeru Town Council, Mukono District, on Sunday.
The deceased, identified only as Bob Felix, reportedly came into contact with live high-voltage power lines while installing a window on the second floor of the structure.
Witnesses said the incident occurred when Felix accidentally touched the three-phase electricity lines, which were positioned dangerously close to the building, resulting in a fatal electric shock.
By the time residents and authorities arrived at the scene, a large crowd had gathered around the site, with relatives and community members mourning as the body lay amid construction materials.
The building is said to have been constructed directly beneath high-voltage electricity lines, raising serious safety concerns among residents and local leaders.
Area councillor Rehema Namuyanja said warnings had previously been issued against constructing in restricted zones but were often ignored.
“We have been warning people about constructing under power lines, but some ignore the guidelines,” she said, expressing concern over the growing number of structures being erected in unsafe locations, including road reserves and areas designated for electricity infrastructure.
Namuyanja urged developers and landlords to comply with safety regulations to prevent similar incidents.
Residents have since called on authorities to take stricter action, including demolishing buildings constructed in hazardous areas, to protect lives.
Police in Mukono District responded to the scene, documented evidence, and transported the body to Mulago National Referral Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
