Buganda Education Minister Calls for Full Adoption of Competency-Based Curriculum
Buganda Kingdom's education minister says Uganda's competency-based curriculum is equipping learners with practical skills, creativity and innovation, urging schools to fully embrace the reforms as the kingdom prepares for the 33rd Coronation Anniversary of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II.

The Buganda Kingdom Minister for Education and Social Development, Choltilda Nakate Kikomeko, has urged schools across the kingdom to fully implement Uganda's competency-based curriculum, saying it is preparing learners with the practical skills, creativity and innovation needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

Ms Nakate made the remarks while touring a students' skills exhibition at Lubiri High School's Buloba Campus, where learners showcased projects developed under the new lower secondary curriculum.

The exhibition featured student innovations in hairdressing, tailoring, crop production, construction, technology, science, nursing and other technical disciplines, highlighting the school's emphasis on practical, hands-on learning.

Speaking after touring the exhibition, Ms Nakate praised the students for demonstrating creativity and confidence through their work.

"What we have seen today has strengthened our confidence in the knowledge and skills our learners are acquiring. The world is changing very fast, and we want children to leave school ready to create jobs, innovate and contribute to society," she said.

She said the competency-based curriculum encourages creativity, commitment, hard work and passion, adding that the students had demonstrated enthusiasm for learning and confidence in applying their skills.

"The new curriculum demands innovation, dedication and a willingness to work. These learners have shown that they love what they do, think creatively and approach their work with confidence," she added.

As Buganda prepares to mark the 33rd Coronation Anniversary of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, Ms Nakate encouraged parents to participate in the celebrations by undertaking community initiatives such as tree planting and regular health check-ups.

She also commended parents for prioritising their children's education, describing it as one of the greatest investments they can make for the future.

"Parents have a responsibility to prepare children who will lead Buganda in the future. If we fail to invest in our children today, we risk being left behind by the changing times," she said.

Ms Nakate further applauded students who exhibited web design and digital technology projects, saying such innovations position the school to compete on the global stage.

Lubiri High School Buloba Campus Headteacher Charles Sebina said practical skills training is a core component of the school's education programme.

He said students qualify for a Directorate of Industrial Training (DIT) certificate by Senior Three, providing them with skills to start income-generating ventures or pursue further technical education.

Sebina thanked Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II for establishing Lubiri High School, saying the institution continues to equip young people in Buganda with both practical and academic skills needed to succeed in the modern world.
