Man Shot with Bow and Arrow in Madi-Okollo Over Political Dispute

Police in Madi-Okollo District are investigating an incident of attempted murder in which a 30-year-old man was shot with a bow and arrow by his own brother following a heated political disagreement.

The incident occurred on January 4, 2026, at about 6:30 p.m. in Otraka Lali Cell, Enyio Ward, Inde Town Council, and was registered at Rhino Camp Police Station the following day under CRB 006/2026.

The victim, Patrick Asia, a peasant farmer and resident of the area, was reportedly shot in the leg. The suspect has been identified as Sunday Bulia, the victim’s brother and a resident of the same locality.

According to preliminary police findings, the violence stemmed from an argument over candidates for the Member of Parliament seat for Lower Madi Constituency, as well as disputes related to village political mobilisation activities.

It is alleged that the suspect first quarreled with his father before storming into his house to pick a bow and arrow with the intention of attacking him.

When the victim intervened to separate them, the suspect instead shot his brother, causing serious injury, before fleeing the scene.

Confirming the incident, the West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Josephine Angucia, condemned the act and warned against the growing trend of politically motivated violence.

“This is a very unfortunate incident where political intolerance within a family escalated into near-fatal violence,” SSP Angucia said.

“We strongly condemn such acts and remind the public that political differences should never be settled through violence.”

Police registered a case of attempted murder and issued Police Form 3 to facilitate medical examination. The victim was rushed to Rhino Camp Health Center IV, where a successful medical operation was conducted to remove the arrow from his body.

SSP Angucia said the victim is currently receiving medical care, while police continue to record statements from relevant witnesses.

“The victim is alive and receiving treatment, and statements are being recorded to aid investigations. Although no arrest has been made yet, our officers are actively pursuing the suspect,” she noted.

The police spokesperson further urged members of the public to maintain peace as the country approaches the general elections scheduled for January 15, 2026.

“We appeal to families and communities to exercise political tolerance and restraint. Elections should not divide households or lead to loss of life,” SSP Angucia emphasised.

Police investigations into the matter are ongoing.
