As Uganda joined the world in commemorating the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, communities in Nansana gathered in Gombe Subcounty, Nansana Division, to celebrate the day with a strong message of empowerment and inclusion.
Speaking at the event, community leader Kasule highlighted the significance of the day, emphasizing teamwork and the fight against discrimination.
“The importance of this day is for us to learn to work together in reducing stigma and discrimination,” he said.
Kasule, a leader of persons with disabilities, emphasized his mission to equip them with practical skills for self-reliance.
“Our role is to advocate for people with disabilities and ensure they acquire the skills needed to work,” he added.
He commended the NRM government for its initiatives, including Emyooga, the Parish Development Model, and various grants aimed at uplifting persons with disabilities.
“We thank the NRM government for thinking about us and supporting us through its programs,” Kasule noted.
Despite progress, he acknowledged ongoing challenges such as limited skilling opportunities and a lack of small workshops to support their projects. He revealed plans for farming and livestock initiatives to boost incomes.
The chief guest, Canal David Kansiime Karuhaga, representing the office of Dr. Keren Kayunga, reassured persons with disabilities of continued support.
“Even though you have disabilities, you are very important people,” he said, praising local leaders for their dedication.
Kansiime also encouraged the community to support President Museveni, lauding his leadership on national security and urging citizens to focus on peace and development rather than political misinformation.
“Do not be misled by political lies. Focus on development and stability,” he advised.
He pledged enhanced cooperation with local leaders to ensure ongoing support for persons with disabilities.
“We shall continue working closely with your leaders to make sure you are supported,” he assured.
