At least 10 people were killed and three others critically injured Wednesday morning in a road accident along the Iganga–Bugiri highway in Busowa Town Council.
According to ASP Micheal Kasadha, Regional Police Spokesperson for Busoga East, the crash occurred at around 7am and involved a Toyota Hiace taxi (Drone), registration UBN 817H, and a stationary HOWO trailer, registration UA 647BA / UA 430AA.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the speeding taxi, traveling from Malaba to Kampala, attempted to overtake an unidentified vehicle.
In the process, the driver swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle but collided with the parked trailer, which was stationed about seven meters off the road.
"The impact killed 10 passengers on the spot while three others survived with severe injuries," ASP Kasadha said, noting that the identification of the deceased is ongoing.
Traffic officers promptly responded to the scene to coordinate rescue efforts. The bodies of the deceased were transported to Bugiri Main Hospital mortuary, while the injured are receiving treatment at the same facility.
Police have towed the taxi wreckage to CPS Bugiri for further inspection as investigations continue.
ASP Kasadha urged motorists to exercise maximum caution on the roads, stressing that adherence to safe driving practices is critical to preventing such deadly accidents.
