The 15th East African Community Inter-Parliamentary Games 2025 kicked off in Kampala, with Deputy Speaker of the Ugandan Parliament Thomas Tayebwa representing President Museveni at the opening ceremony.
In a message delivered by Tayebwa, President Museveni underscored the importance of unity and regional integration, noting that the games are not just about winning medals but celebrating the bonds between East African nations.
“Our region only grows when we lift each other up. These games are not about who scores the most goals or tops the medal table; they are a celebration of a community of brothers and sisters,” he said.
The President urged participants to think beyond sport, emphasizing collaboration in areas such as eradicating non-tariff barriers, building strategic infrastructure, launching satellites, and developing joint security and naval capacities.
“Even teams that don’t score should be celebrated, because participation itself strengthens unity,” he added.
Keynote speaker Hon. Amanya Mushega stressed the critical role politicians play in advancing regional integration.
“As politicians, the destiny of regional integration lies in our hands and we must work diligently to achieve it,” he said.
Organized under the leadership of Speaker of the Ugandan Parliament Rt. Hon. Anita Among, the games are expected to foster cooperation and camaraderie among participants from across the EAC.
In his closing remarks, Tayebwa welcomed all attendees, saying, “Karibu nyumbani, our brothers and sisters. Enjoy the games, enjoy Kampala, and enjoy the Pearl of Africa.”
