Mukono Municipality parliamentary aspirant Sarah Nakintu, running under the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) ticket, has called for strengthened community sensitisation on proper garbage management, emphasizing that real change must begin at the household level.
Speaking during the Mukono Municipality Parliamentary Debate hosted by NBS Television on Sunday, Nakintu highlighted the urgent need for structured waste-sorting practices across communities. She noted that Mukono’s growing population and rapid urbanisation demand more sustainable, community-driven solutions to curb poor waste disposal.
“We need to sensitise people about garbage management starting from the household level. We must sort our garbage,” Nakintu said, stressing that improving waste practices would not only clean the municipality but also support recycling initiatives and reduce environmental hazards.
Nakintu outlined her commitment to champion policies that promote environmental stewardship, community training, and collaborative partnerships between households, local authorities, and private waste-management actors.
She argued that empowering residents with knowledge and practical tools is the most effective path toward a cleaner, healthier Mukono.
Nakintu is set to face off with Daisy Nabatanzi Sonko of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), Dunstan Eddie Mbogo of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), George Fred Kagimu of the Democratic Party (DP), and Allan Mawanda of the Democratic Front (DF).
All are seeking to retire incumbent Member of Parliament Betty Nambooze Bakireke, who is seeking yet another term in Parliament.
Nambooze, a lawmaker affectionately known as "Madam Teacher" who has undoubtedly been the people's choice for decades, is experiencing increased pressure with many wondering whether or not she will retain her parliamentary seat.
In the May 2010 by-elections, then running under the Democratic Party (DP), Nambooze secured 16,413 votes defeating NRM’s Peter Balukaba Mukasa who garnered 14,302 votes.
In 2016, Nambooze got 35,341 votes with her closest rivial Fatuma Ndisaba of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) gaining 23,129 votes.
In the last election, Nambooze won with 38,383 votes against her competitor, George Fred Kagimu of the Democratic Party (DP) who got 16,209 votes.
