Eighty-four suspects linked to the deadly November 1 attacks in the Rwenzori region appeared in Kasese Chief Magistrate’s Court yesterday, facing a range of serious charges including treason and terrorism.
The high-profile session took place under tight security, with Uganda Police and Uganda Prisons officers deployed around the court premises to maintain order.
The suspects were presented for the first reading of charges relating to coordinated assaults on security installations across Kasese, Fort Portal, Bundibugyo, Kabarole, and Bunyangabu districts.
The attacks left security personnel injured and several depots destroyed.
According to the prosecution, the suspects face multiple counts, including treason, terrorism, murder, attempted murder, aggravated robbery, and financing terrorism.
As proceedings concluded, the suspects were escorted in pairs, handcuffed, toward prison buses bound for Mubuku Government Prison, where they will remain on remand.
The Chief Magistrate explained that the court lacked jurisdiction to handle capital offences of this magnitude, and the case was adjourned to 23 December 2025 pending referral to the High Court.
Buyaga West Member of Parliament Barnabas Tinkasimire, representing suspects from his constituency, criticized the delay in producing the accused before court.
“I am disappointed that these suspects were kept beyond the legally required 48 hours before being produced in court. Every citizen, regardless of the accusations, deserves due process and fair treatment under the law,” he said.
Investigations continue into what authorities describe as one of the most coordinated attacks in the Rwenzori sub-region in recent years.
