The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) Ltd., in partnership with Rotary Uganda, has today officially launched the EACOP Green Schools Initiative at St. Kizito Primary School in Kasasa Sub-County, Kyotera District.
This initiative is part of EACOP’s Socio-Economic Investment Programme and seeks to transform learning institutions along the EACOP route into exemplary centers of sustainability and environmental stewardship.
This launch follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between EACOP Ltd. and Rotary Uganda in August 2025 to implement the Green Schools Initiative across ten districts along the pipeline corridor: Hoima, Kikuube, Kakumiro, Mubende, Kyankwanzi, Lwengo, Kyotera, Rakai, Sembabule, and Gomba.
The EACOP Green Schools Initiative aims to empower young learners with practical skills and lifelong values that promote environmental conservation.
Planned activities under the initiative include the installation of solar energy systems, establishment of school green spaces with fruit and vegetable gardens, implementation of proper waste management practices, installation of sanitation and handwashing facilities, development of rainwater harvesting systems, and the rollout of awareness programs focusing on environmental protection, health, sanitation, and safety.
Speaking at the launch, Mr. JB Habumugisha, Deputy Managing Director of EACOP Ltd., underscored the importance of environmental stewardship among young people.
He noted that the EACOP Green Schools Initiative represents the company’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental responsibility. By integrating green practices in schools, he said, the initiative addresses immediate community needs while nurturing a generation that will champion environmental protection and sustainable living.
Representing Rotary Uganda, Mr. Geoffrey Kitakuule, Governor of Rotary District 9213, reaffirmed Rotary’s dedication to environmental sustainability.
He emphasized that the partnership with EACOP demonstrates Rotary’s mission to protect the environment and promote community well-being, adding that working with schools creates an opportunity to reach young people who can lead lasting change in their communities.
Ms. Christine Kyeyune Kawooya, Governor of Rotary District 9214, further highlighted the importance of the project, noting that such initiatives empower children and teachers to become advocates for a cleaner, greener, and healthier environment. She emphasized that the Green Schools Initiative is not merely a project but a movement toward a sustainable future.
The launch event brought together representatives from EACOP Ltd., Rotary Uganda, local government officials, and the school administration, all of whom commended the collaboration for its practical impact on education and environmental conservation.
