Police in Luuka District are investigating a suspected food poisoning case that left one pupil dead and eight classmates hospitalised.
The incident occurred on November 14 at Telik Junior School, according to Busoga North Police Spokesperson Samson Lubega.
Preliminary findings indicate that a Primary Two pupil shared food brought from home with classmates.
Shortly after consuming the meal, several children developed severe vomiting and diarrhea and were rushed to Kiyunga Health Centre IV.
The deceased pupil, Namugogo Sharifah, was taken to Kiyunga Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem to determine the exact cause of death. Eight other children remain under medical care.
Two individuals connected to the school’s management have been arrested to assist police in their investigation.
Scene of Crime Officers and medical experts have been deployed to identify the substance responsible and establish how the incident occurred.
“We extend our condolences to the family of the deceased and urge the public to remain calm as we conduct a thorough investigation,” said SSP Samson Lubega.
Authorities say the findings will inform measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
