President Yoweri Museveni, the NRM presidential candidate, on Saturday afternoon concluded his campaigns in the Bukedi sub-region in grand style.
Arriving at Masafu Primary School grounds around mid-day, he was ushered through a sea of NRM supporters that had painted the entire venue yellow.
Addressing the gathering, Museveni reminded residents of the Force Obote Back Again (FOBA) and Alice Lakwena insurgencies that once destabilised Bukedi, noting that such insecurity is now history—thanks to the NRM government.
“NRM has been able to bring peace to the whole country. This is not by accident but because of our politics, which rejects tribal and religious sectarianism and instead promotes the unity of Uganda. That is how we have been able to build a big party like NRM and to create an army, police, judiciary, and civil service that serve the entire country,” Museveni said, drawing loud cheers.
He explained that with peace in place, the country has been able to embark on steady development under NRM leadership.
Infrastructure and Social Services
Museveni highlighted major achievements in Busia, especially in road infrastructure.
“Busia has benefited from several tarmacked roads. We repaired the road from Jinja through Bugiri to the border, constructed the Musita–Namayingo–Lumino road up to the border, and we are now working on the road to Tororo. We are also repairing the railway,” he said.
On electricity, the President noted that all sub-counties have been connected, with power first reaching district headquarters before extension to lower administrative units.
In the education sector, Museveni cited progress with 24 government primary schools and 14 secondary schools across the district and municipality. He reaffirmed government’s plan to ensure a primary school in every parish and a secondary school in every sub-county.
On health, Museveni pointed out that Busia’s 20 sub-counties are served by one hospital, one Health Centre IV, and 14 Health Centre IIIs, leaving only four sub-counties without any health facility.
“The plan is to upgrade Hasyule Health Centre II in Lumino Sub-county, Namungodi Health Centre II in Namungodi Town Council, and Tiira Health Centre II in Tiira Town Council to Health Centre IIIs, as well as construct a new Health Centre III in Masafu Sub-county,” he said.
Regional Integration
With stability achieved, the President said it is now time to focus on regional integration to secure markets for surplus goods produced locally.
“Production has gone up—we have surplus sugar, milk, cement, bananas. The crucial issue now is the market. You who are near Kenya should talk to our Kenyan brothers about the need for integration and a common market,” Museveni urged.
He recalled working with former presidents Daniel arap Moi of Kenya and Ali Hassan Mwinyi of Tanzania to revive the East African Community, which had previously collapsed.
Museveni emphasized that the young generation must now champion East African integration to ensure sustainable markets and economic growth.
“Politics is about the future—how we shall live in this country. That’s why NRM stands for peace, development, wealth creation, jobs, and integration leading to bigger markets. Vote NRM so we can continue on this journey.”
