The much-anticipated Omusinga Charles Wesley Mumbere Iremangoma Birthday Run unfolded today in Kasese, drawing thousands of enthusiastic participants in a colourful celebration of unity, fitness, and cultural pride.
Participants of all ages turned up at dawn, filling the streets with excitement as they competed in the 21km, 10km, and 5km races. Each category was flagged off amid cheers from royal guards, cultural leaders, and residents who lined the routes to show their support.
The event, now expected to become a signature annual fixture on the Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu (OBR) calendar, aims to promote healthy living, strengthen community bonds, and boost tourism in the Rwenzori sub-region. It also sets the stage for the Omusinga’s upcoming 59th coronation anniversary.
Flagging off the 21km race, Obusinga Prime Minister Benson Kule Baritazari applauded the impressive turnout, noting that the overwhelming participation reflects the strength of Rwenzururu cultural heritage and the growing unity within the kingdom.
“This run is not just a sporting activity. It is a symbol of our collective spirit as the Rwenzururu people,” one of the OBR leaders told journalists. “We are grateful to see our sons and daughters, young and old, celebrating the Omusinga’s life through fitness and togetherness.”
Runners expressed excitement about taking part, describing the event as both fun and challenging—especially the 21km route that wound through hilly terrain overlooking the Rwenzori ranges. Many said they look forward to participating every year.
Medical teams, security personnel, and volunteers were stationed along the routes to ensure safety and quick response in case of emergencies. Police reported no major incidents.
Winners in each category received medals and tokens of appreciation, after which celebrations continued with music, dance, and cultural performances at the finish line.
With today’s massive turnout, organisers say they anticipate even greater participation next year, including runners from across East Africa.
The birthday run has further solidified its status as a key highlight of the Obusinga cultural calendar, celebrating the Omusinga’s life while uniting communities through sport and tradition.
