The Global Public Relations Conference (GPRC) is currently underway in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where Uganda’s delegation is exchanging experiences and learning best practices in media and public engagement, crisis management, and tackling misinformation, disinformation, and fake news in the age of AI.
A highlight of the conference was a presentation by Khairy Jamaluddin, former Malaysian Minister of Health and Sports and now a podcaster, who shared lessons from communicating during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Julius Mucunguzi, Spokesperson of Uganda’s Electoral Commission, who is attending the conference, said Khairy emphasized the need for urgency, breaking silos, data-driven approaches, humanizing abstract concepts, and communicating hope rather than doom.
“The future belongs to communicators who are clear, accountable, and humane,” Mucunguzi quoted Khairy. He added that trust equals transparency plus consistency, competency, and empathy, highlighting its critical role in crisis communication.
The conference offers PR professionals a platform to learn from global experts and network with peers. The Uganda delegation aims to apply these insights to strengthen the country’s communication strategies and public engagement.
