Common Man’s Party (CMP) leader Mubarak Munyagwa has accused the National Unity Platform (NUP) of prioritising financial interests over the welfare of Kampala residents in the controversial Nakivubo drainage development project.
Speaking in a recent interview, while on Sanyuka tv. Munyagwa criticised NUP’s top leadership for failing to act on concerns raised by Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago regarding the project, which is linked to businessman Hamis Kiggundu.
“People like Rubongoya should not even get close to Kampala politics and leadership,” Munyagwa said. “If the Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago wrote to him about NUP councillors approving Hamis Kiggundu’s plan to develop the Nakivubo drainage line, and he did not take action, voters should now know where to place him.”
Munyagwa said the decision by NUP councillors to support the project showed disregard for public interest, warning that the development could have serious consequences for city dwellers.
“I think it’s time for Ugandans to apologize to Lukwago,” he added.
“If KCCA has NUP with the majority, how did it pass a plan that will later cause people to shed tears? They chose money over the people.”
The Nakivubo drainage project has sparked widespread debate over urban planning, environmental safety, and accountability in city governance. Critics argue that the project could exacerbate flooding and negatively affect communities around downtown Kampala.
Munyagwa, known for his outspoken and populist political style, accused sections of NUP’s leadership of being out of touch with the needs of ordinary people, saying their decisions reflect personal and financial motives rather than public service.
Political observers note that Munyagwa’s criticism adds to growing internal friction among opposition figures, as questions of transparency and accountability continue to shape Kampala’s political landscape.
Munyagwa reiterated that his Common Man’s Party remains focused on promoting integrity and people-centered leadership, saying Ugandans deserve leaders who put citizens’ interests above profit and political expediency.
